Like it or pineapple lump it, we just don’t seem to be able to stop ourselves. Within days of purchasing a new home we’re shuffling through paint chips, lifting carpets or just tweaking – dreaming all the while of a complete bathroom overhaul.Dad was a builder and I grew up with sawdust in my veins and a sawhorse as my favourite pony. I ingested so much sawdust that it’s little wonder that the urge to improve runs so thickly through my veins. Like the pile of four by two and weatherboard off-cuts that I was perpetually cobbling into treehouses or cricket bats, our cliffside abode was in the constant throes of evolution. Year by year, the decks grew, bathrooms multiplied, a third floor was added, and the colour schemes changed as frequently as the coming and going of the tide. The urge to improve continues to dog my own young family. We started with the obligatory post-OE unit reno, sanded our way through a few rentals, tried out apartment living with a city pad, and finally came to roost on our lifestyle block. Right now we’re eyeing up the deck – expansion would certainly improve the flow; then there’s the bathroom – a revamp would make such a difference.But summer means barbecues, which in our home is shorthand for “time to do the kitchen”. We’re itching to get our hands (and knees) on those floorboards and the cupboards will certainly come to life when they’re stripped back. Now I just need to work out how to rig up the dishwasher elsewhere! Fortunately Dad, now in his late seventies, is still knocking about full of practical solutions and sound advice.Here at Renovate magazine our aim is to provide a gathering place for renovators from all walks of life.
